What is Augmentin?
Augmentin is a combined antibiotic of the broad action. Amoxicillin is in charge of the characteristics of the drug. The antibiotic has a bad influence on the pathogenic microflora and shows pharmacological characteristics as to many bacteria. This ingredient is well tolerated, seldom causes side effects and is often used in pediatrics.
As amoxicillin destructs beta-lactamase and bacteria develop a resistance to it quickly, Clavulanic acid has been added to Augmentin. This ingredient protects Amoxicillin from a destruction and causes a higher therapeutic activity.
Augmentin may be used in the treatment of bacteria that are not sensitive to common Amoxicillin or other penicillin drugs.
Who should take Augmentin?
Augmentin is prescribed patients with different infectious diseases: tonsillitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, otitis media, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, cystitis, pyelonephritis, skin infections, cholecystitis, salmonellosis, dermatoses, sepsis, meningitis, peritonitis, wound infection, and others.
This antibiotic works well for people who have already used penicillin drugs and probably have a resistance to certain bacteria type.
How to take Augmentin?
Every pill of Augmentin contains amoxicillin and clavulanic acid in different doses. So, before buying the antibiotic, it is necessary to consult a doctor and detect a required dose for the treatment of your infection.
A standard therapeutic dose is 375 mg of Augmentin 3 times per day to treat infections of middle severity. If severe infections or chronic infectious processes, the dose may be increased up to 1000 mg 3 times per day.
Even if you feel a relief, do not terminate the course of the treatment beforehand. The treatment usually lasts for 7 to 14 days. But in some cases, the use of Augmentin may take up to 21 days. It will be better, if a doctor controls the treatment as this will indicate the optimal period of taking the antibiotic and reduce a risk of the side effects.
What are side effects?
The side effects of Augmentin may be caused in two cases: either you have an incorrect dose, or you have an intolerance of penicillin antibiotics. In any case, the side effects should be controlled, and if they bring discomfort, go to a doctor.
Using Augmentin may cause the following side effects: candidiasis of mucous membranes, digestion disorder, dry mouth, dizziness, muscle cramps, insomnia, diarrhea, and skin rash.
If skin rash appears locally, and it does not bother you, an antihistamine product may be used and rash will pass in 1-3 days. If urticaria signs or edema appeared, stop taking the antibiotic and go to a doctor.
