What is Bactrim?
Bactrim is a medication with high antibacterial activity. It has a broad action due to the special formula. It has two active ingredients: trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole. These ingredients have different mechanism of the action, so that they increase a therapeutic effect of each other, and faster inhibit the activity of the pathogenic microorganisms. Bactrim provides a bactericidal effect and completely kills the bacteria cells even in minimal doses.
According to the results of the medical studies, microorganisms do not quickly develop a resistance to Bactrim. Even if any bacteria are not sensitive to one of the active ingredients, another ingredient is able to affect their vital processes and inhibit their activity. Therefore, the efficiency of the antibacterial therapy is higher during the use of Bactrim than other antibiotics.
Who should take Bactrim?
Bactrim is prescribed patients with infectious diseases of the different sites and severity level. These may be infectious processes of breathing organs, urinary tract, gastro-intestinal tract or other abdominal cavity organs.
Bactrim may be also prescribed patients with sexually-transmitted diseases and infections of the skin on any stages.
How to take Bactrim?
Certain dose of the antibiotic depends on results of the prior patient’s examination. To obtain exact results, it is necessary to take the blood/urine tests, and have a medical examination. But there is no opportunity to have a complete examination, and the treatment should be started as soon as possible, stick to the standard therapeutic doses.
Adults and children over 12 years old are recommended to take a pill of Bactrim 480 mg 2 times per day. The interval between the use of the pills should be at least 10 hours. If the disease symptoms grow, the dose may be increased, and Bactrim 480 mg is used 3 times per day with the interval of 8 hours.
Children at the age of 2 to 6 years old take a pill of Bactrim 240 mg 1-2 times per day, and children at the age of 6 to 12 are usually prescribed Bactrim 480 mg once per day.
The improvement of the disease symptoms usually occurs within 4-5 days but then it is necessary to take the pills for 2-3 days to fix the result. That is why, a minimal course of the treatment lasts for 7 days. The optimal length of the use of Bactrim is 10-14 days.
What are side effects?
Many reviews of patients confirm a high pharmacological safety of Bactrim. If the average therapeutic doses of the antibiotic are used, the side effects should not appear.
But it is hard to forsee the body reaction, and therefore in some cases, the following side effects occur: headache, dizziness, apathy, tremor, peripheral neuritis, nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, and skin itching.
- Even if the side effects appeared during the use of Bactrim, do not stop the treatment. Perhaps this is a temporal reaction which will not cause a severe discomfort. It is better to consult a doctor allergologist and start taking antihistamine products
- Patients with the functional disorders of the kidneys or liver should carefully take the antibiotic, and if the side effects occurred in these organs, stop taking Bactrim
- Bactrim antibiotic is not prescribed pregnant women and children under 9 months
