What is Flovent?
Floventis an inhaler of Fluticasone used for the treatment of the bronchial asthma. The medicine has a strong anti-inflammatory action. It belongs to a group of glucocorticosteroids, and therefore it shows a broad action.
An anti-inflammatory action of Flovent is conditioned by its ability to slow down a gene expression COX-2, and this leads to the reduction of the synthesis of prostaglandins in the site of the inflammation.
An inhalation of Flovent helps to reduce an inflammation of the respiratory airways and lungs, and relieve a course of the bronchial asthma. The drug may also reduce an intensity of the allergic reaction during the interaction with allergen. The action appears within 3-4 hours, and then a patient has a prolonged improvement.
A period of action of onetime therapeutic dose (1 inhalation) is about 10-12 hours. And so, a drug should be used for up to 2 times per day.
Who should take Flovent?
Flovent is prescribed patients with chronic bronchial asthma. This is a baseline therapy drug that is not able to arrest an attack and has a long-term action. Flovent is also used during severe forms of the bronchial asthma and obstructive pulmonary disease when a patient cannot use systemic glucocorticoids. An inhalation of these ingredients helps to reduce a degree of the side effects.
How to take Flovent?
To treat bronchial asthma, Flovent is used 2 times per day with similar interval between doses. Adults and teenagers over 16 years old should take 100-250 mcg 2 times per day (during light form of a disease).
In case of an average or severe form of the disease, higher doses up to 1000 mcg are required to be used 2 times per day. A dose is prescribed by a doctor, according to the length of the treatment of the bronchial asthma and intensity of the symptoms.
Children at the age of 4 to 16 should take 50-100 mcg 2 times per day.
What are side effects?
An inhalation of Flovent does not normally cause systemic side effects. A concentration of glucocorticoids in the blood is insignificant. But in some cases, the side effects still appear. These are headache, unpleasant taste in the mouth, nasal bleeding, dryness of nose and throat.
The severest side effects may happen within the first week of the treatment. If they are kept for a long time, consult a doctor.
- The drug is used 2 times per day every day. Skipping a dose increases a risk of an acute bronchospasm. You should always have an inhaler for the urgent use that contains the active ingredients for a faster action
- Children under 4 years old, pregnant women and women during lactation do not use Flovent
- If you are taking systemic glucocorticoids, it is necessary to inform your doctor about them and adjust their daily dose, if needed
- If an infection of the mouth cavity or mucous membrane of the throat occurred during the treatment, stop the treatment for a while and consult a doctor.
