What is Lamictal?
Lamictal prevents a development of the convulsive attacks and helps patients with epilepsy to control the frequency of the attacks. It has an ingredient Lamotrigine. It has a strong anticonvulsive action.
The use of Lamictal reduces abnormal agitation of neurons in the central nervous system, slows their activity and increases a convulsive threshold. At the same time, the main functions of neurons are not inhibited, and all physiological processes are kept.
A release of the agitating aminoacids (mainly glutamate) is reduced but within normal range. A patient will not have a deficit of glutamate even during a long-term use of the drug in high doses.
Who should take Lamictal?
Lamictal is prescribed patients with epilepsy to control the functions of the central nervous system and reduce focal and generalized seizures.
How to take Lamictal?
The pills of Lamictal are dissolved in the gastro-intestinal tract well, and therefore there is no need to take them with a lot of water. Swallow the pill entirely and do not chew it.
In case of the monotherapy of epilepsy, Lamictal is used in the dose of 25-50 mg per day. In 1-2 weeks of the treatment, the dose is gradually increased up to 100-200 mg per day depending on the body reaction to the treatment.
Children at the age of 2 to 12 are prescribed a dose of 5 mg per 1 kg of the body weigh per day, and then it is increased up to 15 mg per 1 kg of the body weight.
If combined therapy, the maximal dose of Lamictal should be lower. 50 mg per day is usually enough in order to effectively control the symptoms of epilepsy without side effects.
Old patients who do not have intensive diseases of liver/kidneys/cardiovascular system do not adjust the dose regimen.
What are side effects?
The side effects of Lamictal occur seldom and are often related to the different symptoms in the central nervous system: fatigue, sleepiness, headache, and tremor. Skin allergic reaction happen rarely but if they appeared, consult a doctor.
In general, if the side effects do not cause psychological or physiological discomfort, a medical intervention is not needed. It is necessary to control a patient’s health and adjust the dose if needed.
- If fever and lymphadenopathy appeared without any cause, the use of the drug is stopped. A patient needs a medical aid and a doctor’s examination
- A development of the allergic reaction including severe skin rash or urticaria is one of the symptoms of the hypersensitivity. If allergy detected, stop the treatment otherwise it may cause serious diseases
- If the use of Lamictal is cancelled due to the achieved effect, the cancellation should be gradual. An outbreak of epilepsy may happen in case of the sudden cancelation
- Lamictal is not contraindicated during pregnancy but you should be careful and regularly visit a doctor. If a pregnant woman has side effects during the therapy, inform a physician about it.
